oonrize Studios was officially created in 2006. The title of owner, president, accountant and janitor all go to myself, Roy Spillers (that's me to the right pictured with Bully). If you're not really interested in all this bio stuff and are just here to get my resume, click here.

From the very beginning, I knew what I wanted to create. I also knew that for it to be done right and to be succeessful that I needed the skills that would distinguish me from the hobbyists. I began by pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from American Intercontinental University. My major was in Digital Design and I completed the degree in August 2005, Summa Cum Laude.

Fresh out of school with a bachelors degree in one pocket and a payment book for student loans in the other, I set out to create my business plan. When it was completed and I totaled up the costs required to start up the company, I trembled. Ambitious as I was, I had no capital to purchase equipment, software or marketing materials to get the ball rolling. The only way this was going to happen was to go deeper into debt with loans secured by equity in my home and 401k plan at my day job. Now, the student loan payment book in my pocket will have friends.

After spending thousands of dollars, I was ready to put my business plan into action. Unfortunately my marketing materials just didn't seem to be drawing in the business as I had planned. So I began offering wedding videography services for, ahem, free. "Crazy, Crazy, Crazy", I was told by my family and friends. Maybe, but it began to get me exposure in the industry as well as priceless experience. To get the word out, I contacted and met with event hosting facilities, event planners, family and friends to let them know what I was offering. After countless days of knocking on doors, making phone calls and sending emails, I soon began receiving interest in my offers and started booking weddings. I filmed and produced 6 wedding videos for free before I felt comfortable to start charging competitive prices for services.

Wedding videos are a lot of fun to produce and the gratitude shown by the clients on a professional product created for them is very satisfying. I knew though that there were other opportunities that existed that I needed to start exploring if I wanted to grow the business. So I shifted focus from producing exclusively wedding videos to include business and institutional productions. Additionally I wanted to offer graphic design services which is the actual skill that I acquired in my degree program. The problem with changing the business model was that the time required to invest would increase exponentially. Having the aforementioned day job was not conducive to this plan. Confucius say "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life". In all honesty, I really wasn't happy with my day job and I really wanted to spend more time on what I loved, Moonrize Studios. Now the path is cleared and I can see where I am going, and I love the view along the way.

Most companies will post bios or 'about us' sections on their web sites while referring to themselves in the third person. My first person accounting of what Moonrize Studios is and who I am is completely intentional. I want prospective clients to know me, the owner, the president, the accountant and the janitor. I want to assure them that we are committed to customer focus while delivering a professional product by satisfying the human need. I spent many years with a large corporation, made a decent living and came out of it lacking any real satisfaction. Looking back on it, I figured out that the reason for this was as an information technology professional I never really connected well with machines. The fact is, I need that human interaction and I would like to think I'm pretty good at making it work to advance the business I have created.
